How To TRANSITION Into A Proper Trophy Position! | Tennis Serve Lesson

Something we have seen over time is how ATP and WTA players over time have adapted their serve styles when entering into their trophy positions on their serve. This is the part of the serve where you store energy and find balance before making your m...

    John- The palm does not have to face down with strings facing to sky and ground in initial position. Taylor Fritz- whose serve you have already analyzed- has racquet on edge paralel to base line with strings facing front and back of court. His racquet rises on edge into racquet drop. Then he drives up to ball. He has hit 130bmph serves and is a top ten talent. It is working for him. I love his serve and am working hard to replicate his motion. 🎾

      @topspin1715 2 дня назад

      @@RK-ft9rn Cross over steps to get to an incoming ball isn’t the fastest option. Just watch any RUclips tennis pro match on slow motion. He’s advocating to reach wide balls using the foot to push off thereby covering MORE ground. Left foot pushes to get to a ball to your right or right foot pushing to get to ball on your left. If you want to move to wide balls using cross over steps instead it will take longer. But don’t take my word of it, go ahead and have someone feed you wide balls, try each method and decide for yourself.

    Great to see you back! pushing the analysis to the extreme: why not just start with the racket in the trophy position place (on the right side with palm down) before the toss? i thought maybe this wld ruin momentum/fludidity, but many players (eg A. Roddick) have a slight pause anyways. Iga Swiatek's new serve nearly goes to that extreme (but with palm sideways and not down).

      @@PerformancePlusTennis btw I love your videos and take on tennis it's great original content. Backstory to me going down the line is I am a lefty and my FH is my big shot so I generally either pin the righty in their BH corner use the down the line FH to bring them over and hit another FH to finish the point back into the their BH. If I am timing the ball well it works although that sometimes is a problem as I start to think I can hit downline on deep shots as you demonstrated in your video and the errors start piling up. I do recognize after blowing 2 or 3 I look how deep I am and stop doing that as that's low percentage.

      @@williamsannuto8239 Hi William, Thanks for the great feedback! Being a lefty is a bit different, as most players move better to their forehands than backhands. However, I have two simple rules for going DTL: 1) I have to fully believe and anticipate I will make the shot, and (2) I believe the shot will produce a weak or no return from my opponent. I hope this is helpful...keep me updated!

      Hi Michael, Thanks for your great (and common) question. I would ask your coach to demonstrate, in slow motion, the exact movement he wants you to perform on your serve. Let's see what he comes up with. Compare that to reality. It's common for coaches to associate racquet acceleration with snapping, but the movement needs to be clarified that the wrist does not snap or flick into and through contact. Let me know how it goes. Thanks, John

    I think hammer grip is THE best ..... Fred Pery , Arthur Ashe , Illie Nastasi , Johny Mac , Estefan Edberg all were using hammer grip .... the most versatile grip of all . tennis is NOT about power, tennis is about Art of placement AND depth .... depth and placement beats ANY powerful tennis player .

    • @PerformancePlusTennis
      @PerformancePlusTennis 11 дней назад

      I appreciate your perspective and comments. And I agree the continental grip is the most versatile. However, the game has changed...more power, more spin, higher contact points, etc. We don't see players using the C grip on the forehand for these reasons. The Eastern and Semi-western provide better leverage and power and all contact points (low, medium and high), and the ability to generate more topspin. Edberg was literally the last to use it (although Gasquet is not far off the C grip), but he, like the others mentioned had one goal...get to the net. Their forehands would never survive in the game today. Kindly, John

    I agree that many pros hit underspin volleys, but David MacPherson, who coached the Bryan brothers for most of their career, said they had the best volleys in the world because they hit higher volleys flat-and hard with lots of “stick.” It can be done with a continental grip; you just tilt the racket face so it’s perpendicular to your intended line of the ball’s flight and hit slightly down, moving the racket face on that same line. It’s easy to do on high volleys because don’t have to get the head of your racket quite so high.

    • @PerformancePlusTennis
      @PerformancePlusTennis 13 дней назад

      Thanks for the feedback and comments, BJ. When it comes to the Bryan brothers and their style of doubles, the flatter volleys were often more effective because they were all over the net...closer than almost any team in history, (maybe McEnroe the same) and certainly closer than when playing singles on most volleys. Technically, the idea of tilting the Racquet face using the same grip involves the wrist and is a tough task for most rec players, and it doesn't make sense. Best, John
